What a Pyramids of Giza tour is

A Pyramids of Giza tour is a guided visit to the Giza plateau, next to Cairo.

The plateau has the three large pyramids, the Great Sphinx and many smaller tombs and temples (Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities). An electric shuttle bus system runs on the plateau, as of April 2025 (State Information Service).

What you see on the plateau

The Great Pyramid (Khufu)

This is the tomb of King Khufu. Its original height was 146.5 m. It was the tallest structure in the world for 3,800 years. It is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that still stands (Ministry).

Inside, a long passage called the Grand Gallery goes up to the King's Chamber. Khufu's sarcophagus (stone coffin) is still in this room. For tickets and the route inside, read Inside the Great Pyramid.

The Pyramid of Khafre

Khafre was the son of Khufu. His pyramid was originally 143.5 m high. It stands on higher ground, so it looks as tall as the Great Pyramid. Near the top, you can see some of the original outer layer of polished limestone (Ministry).

The Pyramid of Menkaure

This is the smallest of the three large pyramids. Its original height was 65 m. The lower part of its outer layer is granite from Aswan, more than 800 km away. Three small queens' pyramids stand next to it (Ministry).

The Great Sphinx

The Sphinx has the body of a lion and the head of a king. Workers cut it from the bedrock. The evidence points to the rule of Khafre (Ministry).

The Valley Temple of Khafre

This temple is next to the Sphinx. It has walls of large limestone blocks with a granite outer layer, alabaster floors and granite pillars. It is one of the best-preserved temples of the Old Kingdom, the period when Egyptians built the Giza pyramids (Ministry).

The panoramic viewpoint

This viewpoint is in the desert, far from the Great Pyramid (Earth Trekkers). It is too far to walk for some visitors. In the 2022 trial plan, the shuttle bus route started at a Panorama station (State Information Service).

Entry tickets

The plateau ticket costs EGP 700 for a foreign adult and EGP 350 for a foreign student. Children under 6 enter free (egymonuments.com).

The plateau ticket does not include the inside of the pyramids, the Tomb of Meresankh III or the workers' tombs (Ministry). To go inside the Great Pyramid, you need a separate ticket. It costs EGP 1,500 for a foreign adult.

Some tours include the entry tickets and some do not. Ask before you book. For all prices and where to buy them, see Pyramids of Giza tickets.

Students must be age 24 or less. They must show a valid student ID.
