What you see inside the Great Pyramid

The Great Pyramid has three chambers. Two of them are high inside the stone structure. No other pyramid has this layout.

This is the route that visitors use today:

  1. The Robbers' Tunnel. You enter through a tunnel that was cut into the north side. It is approximately 7 m above the ground. The original entrance is higher and is not the visitor entrance.
  2. The Ascending Passage. This passage goes up at an angle of approximately 26 degrees. It is approximately 1.2 m high and 1 m wide. Most adults must bend forward.
  3. The Grand Gallery. This is a tall, sloped hall. It is 8.6 m high and 46.7 m long. Above approximately 2.3 m, the walls step inward seven times.
  4. The King's Chamber. This room has granite walls and a flat granite roof. It contains Khufu's granite sarcophagus (stone coffin). The sarcophagus is empty and has no lid.

The rooms that visitors see have no ancient paintings or inscriptions. Builders' marks and the names of work groups survive only in small rooms above the King's Chamber. Visitors cannot enter these rooms.

Time and conditions inside

No official source gives the time for a visit inside or the temperature inside. The route is short, but it goes up a long slope. Sometimes you must wait at the entrance.

The passages are stone tunnels with no windows. Two narrow air shafts connect the King's Chamber to the outside. A ventilation system was installed in these shafts in 1992. Drink water before you go in. Wear shoes with a good grip.

Who should not go inside

The passages are narrow, low and steep. You must bend for a long distance.

  • If you have a fear of small, closed spaces, stay outside.
  • If you cannot bend or climb for some minutes, stay outside.
  • If you have a heart, breathing, back or knee condition, ask your doctor before your trip.

Is it worth going inside?

  • Go inside if you want to see the Grand Gallery and the King's Chamber.
  • Stay outside if you want art or decoration. The rooms are bare stone.
  • Compare the costs. The Great Pyramid ticket costs EGP 1,500 for a foreign adult. The plateau ticket costs EGP 700 for a foreign adult.
