How to get to the pyramids from Cairo: tour, ride app or taxi

To get to the pyramids from Cairo, most visitors go by road. The main options are a tour with transport, a ride-hailing app such as Uber, or a taxi. The Giza plateau is approximately 13 km southwest of central Cairo, but traffic can make the drive long.

We did not find official, current routes for public buses or the metro to the plateau. This guide does not cover them.

Distance and time

The Giza plateau is at the edge of the desert, approximately 13 km southwest of central Cairo. Traffic in Cairo can make a short drive take much longer. Leave early in the morning.

Plan to arrive before the last entry. Every day, except Ramadan, you can enter the plateau from 07:00, last entry 16:00. During Ramadan, you can enter from 08:00, last entry 15:30.

By tour

A tour company drives you from your hotel to the plateau and back. Many tours also include a guide. Some tours include the entry tickets and some do not.

By ride-hailing app

Uber operates in Cairo. You can request a ride to the plateau in the app.

  • Request each trip in the app. On its Cairo airport page, Uber tells riders not to accept trips that are not in the app.
  • Plan your return trip before you leave the plateau. Check where your driver can meet you.

By taxi

The Cairo Airport website gives this information about taxis in Cairo:

  • White taxis have meters.
  • Old black and white taxis usually do not have a meter.

If a taxi has no meter, agree the full price before you get in. Say if the price is for one way or for a return trip.

Arriving at the plateau

The plateau has a new visitor centre. In April 2025, the State Information Service reported that visitors entered through the gate on the Cairo–Fayoum road. An electric shuttle bus system runs between the stops on the plateau, as of April 2025.
